Dutch to Ban Poultry Waterbath Stunning |

The Dutch minister of Agriculture has announced that a ban is to be put in place against the waterbath electrical stunning of poultry in the Netherlands. Minister Verburg has decreed that all poultry slaughterhouses are to use stunning methods that are more animal welfare friendly. The decision also follows a recent study carried out by the Animal Sciences Group at the University of Wageningen, which has found that waterbath stunning undoubtedly aversely affect the welfare of chickens as it can lead to the killing of birds that are still conscious enough to experience pain. According to the Dutch Dierenbescherming, which is closely monitoring these developments, the minister has asked the Animal Sciences Group to look into alternatives for stunning.
